Event Photography for the 2026 TNQ Tourism Industry Excellence Awards
Client: Tourism Tropical North Queensland
Event: 2026 TNQ Tourism Industry Excellence Awards
Location: The Mill, Stratford, Cairns
Services: Event photography, awards photography and corporate portraits.
The 2026 TNQ Tourism Industry Excellence Awards brought together approximately 200 tourism industry members to recognise ten outstanding recipients from across Tropical North Queensland. The event celebrated the people and organisations helping to shape the region, from respected industry pioneers to emerging tourism leaders.
Andrew Tunney Photography was engaged to document the complete awards experience, creating a professional visual record of the event while providing Tourism Tropical North Queensland with a versatile collection of images for communications, publicity and future event promotion.
The Brief
The assignment required much more than photographing award presentations. The objective was to tell the complete story of the evening, beginning with venue preparations and concluding with the celebrations following the ceremony.
The supplied 2026 Tourism Awards Photography Shoot List identified several priorities:
Capture the venue entrance, event signage and red-carpet area before guests arrived.
Photograph the TTNQ team together before the event.
Document the styling, centrepieces, stage, trophies, certificates, catering stations and event branding.
Capture candid guest arrivals, networking and cocktail-hour interactions.
Photograph individual guests and groups in the designated photo area.
Record speakers, audience reactions and important ceremony moments.
Prioritise each award presentation and produce both presenter-and-recipient photographs and individual winner portraits.
Capture winners’ speeches, post-ceremony portraits and informal celebrations.
Supply a mixture of landscape and portrait photography, supported by selected video content.
A particularly important requirement was ensuring that every award recipient received consistent, professional coverage while the ceremony continued to run on schedule.
The Approach
Planning around the event schedule
The photography plan was structured around the event’s operational timeline, beginning with bump-in and technical checks before guests arrived. This created an opportunity to photograph the venue, stage, décor and awards display while each element was still pristine and unobstructed.
Working ahead of the guest arrival time also allowed essential team photographs and venue establishing shots to be completed without competing with the demands of the live event.
Documenting the complete guest experience
Once doors opened, the coverage shifted from structured venue photography to observational storytelling. Wide photographs established the scale and atmosphere of the event, while tighter candid images documented guest arrivals, conversations, hospitality and industry connections.
Formal red-carpet and photo-area portraits complemented the candid coverage. This combination provided TTNQ with both polished stakeholder photographs and natural images that reflected the character of the tourism community.
Prioritising the award recipients
The central focus of the assignment was the awards ceremony. Coverage was organised to capture the key stages of each presentation:
The announcement and audience response
The recipient approaching or appearing on stage
The presentation of the award
The recipient with the presenter
An individual portrait of the recipient holding the award
The acceptance speech, where applicable
Post-ceremony photographs and celebrations
This repeatable sequence helped maintain visual consistency across the award categories while still allowing each recipient’s individual moment to be documented.
The ceremony recognised recipients across categories including the Chair’s Award for Excellence, Outstanding Contribution by an Individual, Outstanding Commitment to the Industry, TTNQ Life Membership, Young Achiever Excellence, Sustainable Tourism Excellence, Customer Service Excellence, the Robbie Bastion Award for Inbound Marketing and the Best of Queensland Experience Excellence Award.
Balancing formal coverage with genuine moments
Award ceremonies involve important photographs that cannot be recreated. Presentations, reactions and interactions often happen within seconds, so the approach required constant awareness of the stage, presenters, recipients and audience.
Formal photographs ensured that TTNQ had dependable images of every major presentation. At the same time, candid coverage captured the personal congratulations, reunions and industry connections that gave the gallery warmth and authenticity.
The Outcome
The completed coverage created a cohesive visual account of the awards, from the final stages of preparation through to the post-ceremony celebrations.
The resulting gallery was designed to give TTNQ a broad selection of assets suitable for:
Awards announcements and media communications
Website articles and online galleries
Social media posts
Sponsor and stakeholder recognition
Recipient profiles
Internal communications
Future event promotion
Historical documentation of the region’s tourism industry
Importantly, the photographs did more than record who received each award. Together, they documented the people, relationships and shared commitment behind Tropical North Queensland’s tourism industry.
TTNQ subsequently credited Andrew Tunney Photography as the official awards photographer and linked the event gallery from its published awards overview.
Why the Assignment Mattered
The TNQ Tourism Industry Excellence Awards recognise contributions spanning decades of regional tourism development, environmental stewardship, customer service, inbound marketing and emerging leadership. The 2026 recipients included long-standing industry contributors, tourism operators, guides, mentors and sustainability leaders from across the region.
Photographing an event of this significance requires a balance of preparation, discretion and responsiveness. Every recipient deserves a strong record of their achievement, while the client needs a gallery that communicates the scale, professionalism and atmosphere of the occasion.
For Andrew Tunney Photography, the assignment was an opportunity to help preserve an important moment in Tropical North Queensland’s tourism story and to provide TTNQ with imagery that could continue supporting its communications well beyond the event itself.
